Hispanics or the Latino community make up around 20% of the US population, and they are still growing in numbers. Since it is the biggest minority within the US, businesses are slowly realizing their importance.

Today, most businesses within the US consider Hispanics their primary or secondary target audience. Companies are now willing to bridge the opportunity gap in the workplace, offering spaces to Hispanics. Moreover, Hispanics are now being offered mainstream platforms to voice their opinions and to advocate for their rights.

Considering all these developments, one might feel there is no room for improvement; however, within the business world, education, workforce, and entertainment, Hispanics are still considered a marginalized community.

So, what can we do about it?

Well, if you are also curious, then keep reading. This write will focus on some of the important yet effective ways that can help you create inclusivity for Hispanics living within the US.

Top 5 Ways to Create and Promote Inclusivity for Hispanics Living in the USA

    • Protect Their Language

When an immigrant moves to another country, the very first thing they get to learn is the language.

Language is not just a way of communication. For a minority, it works as an identity. So, by asking a minority to let go of their language, you are technically taking away their identity.

Now, I know most people might disagree with this, considering that sticking to just one language means you are restricting communication for a whole community. However, creating inclusivity means offering them a choice to pick the language based on their convenience and making them feel heard and valued.

Businesses are offering inclusive spaces for their customers by providing them with a choice. For instance, Spectrum is an internet and cable TV service provider in the US, which caters to the Hispanic audience by offering them a Spanish channel lineup as well as support for servicio de Spectrum. Customers can simply navigate information on their site or talk to customer service in Spanish language.

    • Respect Their Culture

We all love Hispanic fashion, food, content, music, and makeup. However, when it comes to respecting their traditions and culture, we often find ourselves judging.

So, what do we mean by respecting the Hispanic culture?

Well, the first rule of respecting someone is simply getting educated about them. One of the biggest mistakes that we commit, even as an ally, is generalizing Hispanics. Keep in mind that Hispanic is a general term used for people living in Latin America, but the region has so many different countries.

For instance, Spain, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia are all Hispanic countries. However, all these countries have different cultures, different histories, and folklores. So, while addressing people from these regions, make sure you are not generalizing or stereotyping them.

    • Offer Them Voice

Another very important way to create inclusivity for the Hispanic community is by helping them voice their opinion.

Now, I know most people think that Hispanic people are already famous for being loud and unapologetic about their opinions; however, in reality, most of the Hispanic voices are snubbed in the echo chambers.

As a non-Hispanic ally, it is important to not just share but also promote Hispanic voices. For this, you can either use online platforms to share their stories, offer them support on a digital platform via comments and engagement, or retweet their tweets as well.

Apart from this, raising awareness about their social issues is very important, especially in the public eye. Make sure to listen more and keep your opinion out of the conversation; this way, you will be able to contribute to their progress rather than weighing their opinions down.

    • Advocate for Them

A common misconception about Hispanics in the US is that they are treated equally and their issues are similar to those faced by non-Hispanics. However, in reality, Hispanics still face racism, bias, and discrimination in public spaces.

As a Hispanic ally, you can use your position to not just advocate for their rights but also make sure they are treated equally. Moreover, creating spaces in fields of education, employment, healthcare, entertainment, etc., is also very important.

Another very important way to advocate for them is simply by supporting the policies that fight for the diversity, equity, and inclusion of their rights. This way, you will be able to offer them space where it matters the most, i.e., in policymaking, leadership, and movement.

    • Giving Them Opportunity

Since Hispanics in the US are mostly immigrants, they do not have the same buying capacity, social standing, and business ownership as non-Hispanics. This puts them in a position of less power.

Moreover, there is a desire to hire people from the same background, which means most employers do not relate to the Latino workers. Consequently, when most employers are looking to hire new workers, they prefer non-Hispanics.

As an ally, it is important to start different skill-based programs where Hispanic youth can enroll and learn employable skills. Apart from this, major companies and educational institutes need to come together and help the marginalized community, especially Hispanics in high-potential fields.

Simply put, Hispanics in the US are playing a very important role in the development of each industry and in the overall growth of the economy. Above mentioned are some of the additional ways this contribution can be improved and further supported.
